What changed

Between April and June 2026, visitors spent 258.8 million guest nights in EU short-term rental accommodation booked through Airbnb, Booking or Expedia. Eurostat published the national Q2 figures on 2 October. The total was 13.1 million nights, or 5.3%, higher than in Q2 2025. Compared with Q2 2024, it was up by 50.0 million nights, or 23.9%.

The release also gives regional results for January–March 2026, but those are a separate reference period. They should not be mixed with the Q2 national total.

What the count measures

This is a count of guest nights booked through the three platforms covered by Eurostat’s data-sharing arrangements. It is one channel of short-stay accommodation activity. It is not a count of listings, available homes, bookings, revenue or occupied bed places across every type of accommodation.

The comparison also says nothing by itself about why the total changed, how many individual properties were involved, or whether the activity was concentrated in particular cities. The 23.9% comparison with 2024 is a change in guest nights, not a measure of prices or income.

Why property readers should care

The increase is a useful signal that platform-booked short stays were more active across the EU in Q2 than a year earlier. For an owner or buyer weighing seasonal accommodation, it can be a prompt to examine the local market and the months that matter for a specific property.

It cannot establish that short-term lets are reducing long-term rental supply. That question needs local evidence on registered and active listings, occupancy, housing stock, rental contracts and regulation. A sound property comparison should keep tourism demand separate from permanent-home availability and test the costs and vacancy assumptions of the individual asset.
