Batumi recorded a 100-year September rainfall event after 275 mm fell in 21 hours

Batumi experienced an exceptional rainfall event on September 19–20 that temporarily flooded streets and overloaded parts of the city’s infrastructure. Georgia’s National Environment Agency said rain continued for 21 hours and totaled 275 mm, more than 90% of the monthly climatic norm. One hour alone, between 21:00 and 22:00 on September 19, produced 52.5 mm. The agency recorded 273 mm over 24 hours at Batumi station and said the amount was unprecedented for September in the station’s historical observations, corresponding to a roughly 100-year return-period event for the month. The event does not by itself establish that every affected street or building is structurally flood-prone, but it adds a practical property check for buyers and owners: drainage, basement and parking access, pump systems, ground-floor exposure, insurance and building maintenance can matter alongside price and yield.
